Seismic Certification Guides — AS 1170.4 Seismic Design, Earthquake Building Code & Structural Engineering Compliance

Everything you need to get certified

Step-by-step guides for every role on the platform — from creating your first project to issuing a signed AS 1170.4 certificate.

Builder & Contractor Guide

Create projects, manage documents, engage certifiers, and receive your AS 1170.4 certificate.

Register & Set Up Your Account

Get started in under three minutes.

Create your account

Visit seismiccert.au and click Get Started. Choose the Builder / Contractor role, enter your name, email, and password, then confirm your email.

Complete your company profile

The onboarding wizard collects your company name, ABN, state, and licence details. This information appears on all project records and certificates.

Access your dashboard

Once onboarding is complete you land on the contractor dashboard — your central hub for projects, documents, certifiers, and notifications.

Create a New Project

A three-step wizard guides you through building classification, geometry, and services.

Step 1

Step 1 — Building Classification

Select your NCC building class (Class 1–10) from illustrated cards. The platform pre-suggests an Importance Level (IL1–IL4 per AS 1170.4) which you can override.

Step 2

Step 2 — Building Geometry

Use the live building silhouette to set above-ground storeys (Ground Floor, Level 2, Level 3…) and basement levels (B1, B2…). Enter the project address — a seismic hazard tooltip shows the estimated site factor for your postcode.

Step 3

Step 3 — MEPF Services

Select which Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire services are in scope. Structural is always included. The platform automatically creates a document folder tree for each service and every floor.

Manage Documents

A structured folder tree keeps every floor and service organised.

Navigate the folder tree

Master Documents sits at the top of the sidebar. Below it, basement floors (B1, B2…) appear in amber and above-ground floors (Ground Floor, Level 2…) in the brand colour. Click any folder to see its documents.

Upload and version documents

Drag and drop PDF, DOCX, DWG, or IFC files into a folder. Uploading a revised file automatically creates a new version — the previous version is marked Superseded and the new one is marked Current.

Rename level folders

Hover any floor folder and click the ⋮ menu to rename it. Rename "Level 2" to "First Floor" or "B1" to "Car Park" — the label updates everywhere in the platform.

Add Services & Restrict Floor Access

Control exactly which floors each sub-contractor can see.

Edit services post-creation

From the project Overview tab, click Edit Services. Add or remove MEPF services at any time. New service folders and document stubs are created automatically.

Restrict to specific floors

Toggle Restrict to specific floors for any service. A chip grid appears showing all floors — tap to include or exclude. Sub-contractors assigned to that service will only see their permitted floors.

Invite sub-contractors

From the Team tab, enter a sub-contractor's email and select their MEPF service. They receive an invitation link and, once accepted, see only their assigned service folders and permitted floors.

Engage a Certifier

Find an accredited certifier and submit your project for review.

Browse the certifier marketplace

Navigate to Find Certifiers to browse accredited professionals by state, building class, and specialisation. Profile completeness tiers (Bronze → Platinum) indicate experience and responsiveness.

Send an engagement request

Click Request Certification on a certifier's profile. Include a message describing your project timeline and any specific requirements. The certifier receives a notification immediately.

Respond to queries

If the certifier raises a query about a document, you receive a notification. Upload revised documents and respond in the Queries tab. The certifier is notified when you mark a query resolved.

Receive Your Certificate

Once the certifier approves, a signed PDF certificate is issued instantly.

Track project status

The project status badge updates in real time: Draft → Under Review → Queries Raised → Approved → Certified. The Timeline tab shows every event with timestamps.

Download your certificate

When the certifier issues the certificate, you receive a notification and the signed PDF is available in the project's Certificates tab. The certificate number is also publicly verifiable.

Share the verification link

Anyone can verify your certificate at seismiccert.au/verify by entering the certificate number. Share the link with councils, insurers, or project stakeholders.

Importance Level affects requirements

IL3 buildings (schools, assembly buildings > 500 persons) and IL4 buildings (hospitals, emergency facilities) require an independent peer review in all states. The checklist above shows baseline requirements for IL2 buildings. Use SeismicCert AU to automatically generate the correct document checklist for your specific building class and IL.
